LECTURE NOTES

Week 12 (17/06/19)

Week 11
We teamed up with students from BIA ( interior architecture ). My partner, Tisya created a brand called Beam, which is built on the idea of having a space that helps people that are battling with mental health through facilities that would help to relive, heal and bring them peace and also joy. I started to think of possible merchandise suitable for this brand so I came up with a list:

General
- Cards
- Badges
- Journal
- Stickers

Baking Facility
- Cake Toppers
- Sprinkle jar
- Cutting board
- Apron

Here are some images of my partner's draft of the brand.

After sending my partner what I have so far, she narrowed it down to a few and asked me to change the colours to suit the colour of her interior.

After confirming the logo and also the items for the brand, I started to make the designs and created a mock up of the box.

After showing the mock up to Mr Shamsul and getting the green light from him, I went on to making the final outcome.

Failed attempts on the box

The first failed attempt was due to me trying to remove a glue stain which accidentally made scratches on the box so I decided to make another one.

The second failed attempt was due to me cutting the wrong side of the flap thus I couldn't make the box as I can't wrap it as how I wanted it to.

FEEDBACK

Week 11
Specific feedback: Mr Shamsul said that the logo design is good as for the items I should stick with my general ones as it embodies the brand better rather than focusing on one of the facility.

Week 12
Specific feedback: Mr Shamsul encouraged me to use a corrugated box for my box and asked me to create a mock up to show him for the next consultation.

Week 13
Specific feedback: Mr Shamsul said that the box mock up is good and I can start to produce it and he also said that it was okay for me to try sticker paper as I thought of doing double sided.

Week 14
Specific feedback: Mr Shamsul said that my designs for the merchandise and box were good to go so I could print them out.

REFLECTION

Experience
Week 11; I had a rough time figuring out how to embody the brand through a logo as the concept was quite raw and hard to depict with illustrations but after reading her description of the brand name on how beam is meant on how the brand would make people smile I decided to go for a more simple logo with a smile on it. Week 12; This week, I had a hard time cutting out the mock up as it was quite big and knowing how I'm bad at cutting with a blade. Week 13; This week, I had trouble with coming up with the designs especially since it towards the end of the semester I was feeling quite dry from the heavy subjects this semester but in the end I was able to come up with the design for the final. Week 14; I had a hard time assembling the box as there were failed attempts which really discouraged me but I was really happy with the outcome even though it took some time to get there.

Observation
Week 11; I observed that a logo should embody the brand including the merchandise that is chosen. Week 12; I observe that I should have gotten a longer ruler so that its easier to cut out a larger size and also more accurate. Week 13; I observe that I should look at other people's work to get inspiration. Week 14; I observe that I should be more careful when assembling the box and not to do it so late in the night.

Findings
Week 11; I found that the merchandise should also reflect the brand as it becomes part of the brand identity. Week 12; I found that I should have gotten a longer ruler so that its easier to cut out a larger size and also more accurate. Week 13; I found that looking at other people's work can help spark inspiration when I'm stuck. Week 14; I found the assembling part quite tedious and frustrating when things did not go well especially for the box.
