Week 5 (29/04/19)
Lecture 4 - Typography Redux
This week, we had a lecture on typography. We refreshed on characters in a typeface, weights in a typeface, legibility and special formatting which was needed as I kind of forgot some aspects and were also essential for the next project.
INSTRUCTIONS
Week 5 (29/04/19)
For this project, we are required to create a type specimen sheet with different combination of types for the pull quote, heading, subtext and body text. We were also told to create 3 grid systems and use one of them to experiment with the layout from the start to the end of chapter 1.
Type Specimen Sheet:

The chosen typeface combination is:
Heading : Poppins Bold / 24pt
Body text : Avenir Light / 10pt
Pull-quote : Poppins Bold / 12pt
Sub-text : PT Serif / 7pt
The chosen grid system is the 4x5 for my layout. Here is the first attempt on my layout.

After the first attempt, Mr Vinod said that the book cover should be impactful and that the front and back should have a connection. So, I decided to reattempt, here is my second attempt.
FEEDBACK
Week 5
General feedback: We were told to update our blog.
Specific feedback: I received feedback from Mr Vinod that my illustrations are good .
Week 6
General feedback: For the book, we should make sure that our text formatting is correct such as the leading and paragraph spacing.
Specific feedback: The arrangement of the text should be consistent yet still having a movement within the grid. The chunk of text that was separated should be combined to fit my structure.
Week 7
General Feedback: We were told to print out the thumbnail in colour and also the book mock-up in black and white.
Specific feedback: This week, I was told that the layout is good and the book itself is quite colourful however I can still add colours wherever I see fit. I can also start to design my book cover.
Week 8
Specific feedback: The layout of the book is good however, I can add on a few more pages of text to act as visuals to make the book flow more. As for the animated gif, I was told that I can let it have depth and movement to let the viewer feel as if they are in the moment. For the book cover, it needs to make an impact and stand out from others and the front and back cover should be linked.

Week 8; This week, I observe it was quite hard to design the book cover.
Findings
Week 5; This week, I found it quite hard to design the layout as I was unsure of the direction thus the layout was messy. Week 6; This week I found it easier to arrange the layout as I found the direction to go towards. Week 7; This week, It was easier to finish up the layout. Week 8; I found it very hard to design the bookcover as the front and back cover did not connect visually so I had to experiment more.

The author of this book talks about book formats. A book has many considerations such as the nature and quantity of information to be represented, the anticipated lifetime of the book, and also the perennial factors of target audience and cost. These affect factors such as size, print finishing and stock selection. Also, choosing paper size and stock provides a starting point for a project, though there are many opportunities for a creative departure through print finishing techniques, where elements are combined to produce unique and innovative designs.

This book talks on the role of publication. Publications exist to inform, persuade, sell or entertain.
- Inform: Textbooks are conceived as an instructional aid for students who want to learn about a certain topic. In addition to textbooks, other publications that educate or inform include instructional manuals, newspapers, encyclopedias, dictionaries and directories.
- Persuade: Publications that persuade try to convince the reader to make a decision or act in a deliberate way.
- Sell: Sales literature is different from persuasive publications in that it serves as a sales vehicle. Publications that sell allow the reader to see merchandise, make informed choices and then follow through with a purchase.
- Entertain: Publications that entertain such as novels, comic books, or any other publication that exists solely to entertain the reader.
