LECTURE NOTES
22/10/18 (Week 9)
This week, the lecture was about typographic perception and organisation which was presented by a group of classmates. We got to learn about form and content, gestalt, law of perceptual organisation, layout as well as hierarchy.
With the lecture notes given, I've complied it into my own slide.
29/10/18 (Week 10)
In this class, we got a lecture on typography in different mediums and it was presented by a group of our classmates. We learned about print and screen as well as static and motion.
With the lecture notes given, I've complied it into a set of slides of my own.
12/11/18 ( Week 12)
Here are the slides made by me and my group. We presented on typography on the web.
INSTRUCTIONS
22/10/18 (Week 9)
This week, we were introduced to our final project for this module. Mr Vinod went through the project brief and explained about what we can do for this project. In the brief, links were provided to help us have a better idea of what we could do and also to inspire us.
We could approach this final project in two ways.
- Design a font that aims to solve a larger problem or to be part of a solution in the area of interest.
-Explore the use of typeface in the area of interest and identify areas that could be improved to add value to the existing typeface. Here were the links provided in the brief and some of the artworks done. It was very inspiring and also got me excited on the possible ways to execute the final project.

29/10/18 (Week 10)
I started thinking of what interests me and also continued to search up on experimental typography to gain more inspirations. After listing out the things I'm interested in, I decided to narrow down my idea to hand-lettering which is kinetic for promotion purposes ( specifically for children e-books ).

Most e-books these days are promoted with the book covers and are always stagnant which makes them a tad bit boring . My suggestion is to further improve the way it is being promoted with the use of hand lettering and also by adding some motion as it would appeal more towards the target audience which are children. Here are examples of hand lettering and kinetic typography.

After trying and attempting to hand letter the words and visualising the final outcome. I had a hard time of visualising the outcome after trying to sketch out ideas for many times. So I decided to try searching on other ways to implement kinetic typography and hand lettering. As I did my research, I found that there are many Christmas greeting cards that are not well designed and also the use of typeface is rather bad. Some do have a good typeface but it's rather dull and uncreative.Overall it can be further improved.

What
I plan on designing a Christmas hand lettering for the word Merry Christmas or Season's Greetings which can be used in greeting cards such as e-greeting card or a physical card. This idea would have two outcomes whereby one is digital (animated) and the other is a physical card. The hand lettering would express Christmas. Below are some visual reference for the hand lettering.
Why
I decided to do this because a lot of people are sending Christmas greetings that aren't pleasing to the eye and not well designed. Such as the poor choice of typeface and bad hand lettering.
Enhancement
I'll be designing a Christmas hand lettering for the word Merry Christmas or Season's Greetings. There would be two outcomes whereby one is digital (animated) and the other is a physical card.

After that, I moved the illustrations into adobe after effects to create the animation. Here are some process pics.

I received feedback from Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul on how to display the work on screen. Here is the final outcome and process.

The white boarder in figure 1.38 looked very restrictive and static while the gold texture in figure 1.39 made the design look a bit too loud and messy. So I went with my original design on the front cover, here is the final outcome.

FEEDBACK
Week 10
Specific feedback: Mr Vinod said that the printed outcome for project 2 was good which was the tote bag. As for the proposed idea I had for the final project, he said that it was doable and I should also have a clear idea what it is meant for.
Week 12
The M with the swash looks better in that it has a little more celebratory value in it.
Week 13
Mr Vinod liked the final outcome and suggested ways on how to present it digitally and also physically such as through a video for the gif to show that it is usable.
REFLECTION
Experience
Week 10;This week, I started to brainstorm for the final project and also started to sketch out some ideas and do some visual research. Week 11; this week is e- learning due to deepavali and I was starting to sketch out some fonts that would suit my project. Week 12, I started to everything into photoshop to create the final outcome.Week 13, this week I continued to touch up on my final project.
Observation
Week 10; I observe that there are many creative experimental typography that has been done and that they're all different and unique from one another. Week 11; I observe that I should be patient when designing letters as I found it quite hard to design a font that suits the occasion. Week 12; I observe that using adobe after effects to create the gif was much easier then photoshop though the process was tedious.Week 13, this week I observe that it is important to know how to digitally present a physical outcome (example a card).
Findings
Week 10; I found that when choosing what to do for the final project that I had to be realistic on whether it can be done in that certain timeframe and also to know my area of interest as it would affect the outcome. Week 11; I found it really hard to design a font that is suitable for Christmas as there were many ways to a point where it was hard to combine everything. Week 12, I found it challenging to craft certain letters especially the letter S as it is curvy. Week 13, this week I found myself having fun taking the photographs and filming the final outcome.

An Essay on Typography by Eric Gill

| Fig2.1 Book Cover |
This book contains essays on different topics written by the author, which also stated that 'a good piece of lettering is as beautiful a thing to see as any sculpture or painted picture'. He is a creator of many classic typefaces that are commonly used in the world today, which has made an impact on modern graphic designs.
I was interested in the section of the book titled 'lettering' where the author mentioned that letters are not illustrations or representations, but instead are more or less abstract forms. From this book, I also learned about how the first printed books were simply known as typographic imitations of writings by pen. He also mentioned that letters are letters whether it is created by machines or by hands, but it is more desirable for modern machines to make letters as it is more compatible.

| Fig2.2 Book Cover |
This book illustrates features by type designers all over the world. The entries are showcased by key typefaces taken from a wide range of sources that includes posters, magazine covers and more. This book comes in handy for typographers, graphic designers as well as a student like me as it is informative.
I was drawn to the section of the book that talks about drawing letters and type, initial steps in designing type. It is said that one of the most difficult aspects of designing type is focusing on the idea. A designer named Jeremy Tankard said that he keeps a sketchbook for each designs to make quick drawings and any other references to study. This way, all aspects of designs are given the chance to develop freely. Once the initial ideas are more focused, it is important to look into the details such as the size, weights and widths, the type family and the style. Once he felt comfortable with the notes and designs, then he moved on to the computer. He mentioned that each letters are designed individually but it is important to know that they shouldn’t be treated as individual elements as some letters may not go well in a typeface and it may be seen in isolation. Therefore it is crucial to review the letters in context of the other letters.

This book illustrates how each type has its own style and contains a series of type collection that focuses on one specific typeface. Typeface doesn’t just play a part in a design by lending an attribute to the identity of something.
From this book, I got to understand more about Futura and how it’s being used. As of today, Futura continues to be a type that’s used universally and is pretty much available everywhere. Futura is a classic, that has a look that’s simple, with a geometric style that can fit well for different purposes. Here are some examples from the book.
