27/05/19 (Week 9)

Mr Vinod said that the animations were good however, I can work on wilds of the unknown gif to increase the depth. Made the background move slowly towards the person to create more depth. Here is the final outcome for that gif.

This week was an e-learning week due to the rays holidays, we were told to try to finish up the book. Here is the layout of the ebook in thumbnails.

10/06/19 (Week 11)

This week, I started to add buttons and rollovers into my ebook. Here are some process pictures and also the final layout for ebook.

FEEDBACK

Week 8
Specific feedback: The layout of the book is good however, I can add on a few more pages of text to act as visuals to make the book flow more. As for the animated gif, I was told that I can let it have depth and movement to let the viewer feel as if they are in the moment. For the book cover, it needs to make an impact and stand out from others and the front and back cover should be linked.

Week 9
Specific feedback: For the animations, Mr Vinod said that it was good but for the forest one I could make the layers move front one by one to create more depth. General feedback: The layout for the ebook shouldn’t look like its two pages but rather one spread.
Week 10
No feedback was given as it was a holiday.

Week 11
Specific feedback: For the book, the book front cover requires the publisher’s name and author’s name and also the barcode should be bigger. As for the ebook, the layout and animation is good however in the future for my illustration style, I can include some asian aspects to make it more original rather than western. General feedback: Mr Vinod told us that UX experience is important as it affects user’s interest.

Week 12
General feedback: We should be sensitive with the text and layout, making sure it’s a readable point size and leading. We should also increase the pt size for the mobile ebook for it to be readable.
Specific feedback: The e-book desktop is good. As for the e-book mobile the pt size is too small and should be increased and as for the subtext I was suggested by Mr Vinod to include a pop up window through a roll over as my layout did not have the space for it.

Week 13
General feedback: We were told to update our blogs for submission.
Specific feedback: The ebook desktop is good however for the reference I could hyperlink the link so that readers are able to navigate there. For the ebook mobile, the reference section isn't required so I can remove that. However, the layout is good.

REFLECTION

Experience
Week 8; I experience making the animations and found it quite hard at first and also time consuming as it took days to finish animating everything but as time went on I found it easier and faster. It also took quite some time as my animations were quite complex also the fact that I had to separate some visuals to different layers in order to animate. Week 9; This week we started to design our ebook desktop which was a easier process as we had the our layout just that we needed to adapt it to a desktop version. Week 11; This week, I started to add rollovers and buttons to the ebook which was quite interesting and I also adde some animations to the text. As for the ebook mobile version, I started to do the layout however something just did not click well. Week 12; I experience designing the mobile version again but this time it was a bit easier as I understood how I had to design with viewer in mind which changed the way I designed, not just appealing but also user friendly. Week 13; This week was the last week before the submission thus making final checks and making sure that everything was in place. The mobile version was mostly done just some minor changes needed such as kerning.

Observation
Week 8; I observe that when I was illustrating the visuals, I should have kept the animation part in mind so that everything would be in layers beforehand rather than having to do separate them when I wanted to animate as it was time consuming which kind of lengthen the workflow. Week 9, I observe that the desktop version should be treated as one page rather than two pages which was how the book was designed in. Week 11; I observe that designing the mobile version was hard as I had very little space and there was no room for my visuals which made some pages rather empty. Week 12; I observe that empathy for the viewer is essential when designing a mobile version as it affects the user experience which impacts the user's impression of the book and whether they would continue to read on. Week 13; I observe that I had to check through small details such as kerning especially since I had a large body text.

Findings
Week 8; I found that through this process of animating my visuals that I have taken quite an interest in motion graphics as to how it can make a static visual come to life which creates a different impact on viewers though the animation would have been smoother if I drew it frame by frame however this was not the main focus of the book but it was something I would like to try out in my free time.
Week 9, I found that I should treat the desktop version as on page rather than two pages as it would be viewed as one whole spread on the desktop. Week 11; I found it quite hard to design the mobile version of the book however it gave me a new sense of appreciation for UI/UX designers as it was not as easy as it seems. Week 12; I found it easier to design the mobile version as I started to get the hang of it. Week 13; I found that I had to be more sensitive towards the text and small details such as kerning as I tend to overlook these things.

The author talks about the finish of a paper. Paper finish is classified as shown below:
  • Machine finished paper: Paper without a surface finish; also described as uncoated paper.
  • Glazed paper: Paper with a closed, smooth and glossy surface.
  • Embossed paper: Paper with a particular surface texture added through an embossing calender.
  • Coated paper: Paper that is coated, dried and glazed; even more closed and smooth than glazed paper.
  • Laminated paper: Paper coated with plastic or varnish so that it is water-, smudge- and aroma-proof.

The Layout Book by Gavin Ambrose and Paul Harris

Week 11 - Week 13 (10/06/19 - 24/06/19)

Fig 2.1 Front Cover of Book

This book consist of factors that create a good layout. Below are some elements to be considered when designing a layout.
  • White Space: The empty, unprinted and unused space that surrounds the graphic elements in a design to give them breathing space.
  • Balance: The concept of visual equilibrium in a design and the reconciliation of opposing forces in a composition in order to arrive at stability.
  • Juxtaposition: The placement of images side by side to create a relationship between them.
  • Alignment: The position of type within a text block in both the vertical and horizontal planes, which facilitates its positioning to harmonize with other elements in a layout.
