INSTRUCTIONS
Week 11
Mr Hafiz gave us a short brief on what we had to do. Because we had done an assignment with artboards from left to right, we're now doing the opposite. We have to develop a result from back to front or front to back, hence the title of "Front and Back, and Back and Fourth"
Based on a given web page called "Just So Stories" by Rudyard Kipling, we had to choose a story that we wanted to do in order to tell that story in a creative way.
Our chosen story can be done in two different ways, which is either a "Tunnel Book" or a "Web Comic". For me, I chose to do a web comic instead as I felt that it conveyed the story properly without having the viewer to interpret it wrongly or play guessing games .I also think that it would have a bigger impact rather than silhouettes and monotone colours (in my opinion). I think that being able to illustrate the story out and using colours would give more emotion and feeling to it and also bring the viewer/ reader into the story.
For the webcomic we needed to use either made fire or adobe fuse. As for the tunnel book it would be either laser cut or paper cut.
Choosing A story
I ended up not choosing from the list that was given instead I chose " The Little Match Girl " by Hans Christian Andersen.
This is the storyline for the little match girl. It's a sad story and a short summary of a poor girl who was selling matches and before she froze to death in the corner between two houses she saw illusions that comforted her. I decided to change the timeline of the story to the 1900's which was like a modern medieval and I also used some quotes from the story to enhance the meaning of the story and better illustrate the story. I was inspired by princess and the frog and also the movie Anastasia so the background looks a lot like that timeline. At first I wanted to draw a teenager but I ended up drawing a pre-teen instead. I also did more of her perspective scenes like during the illusions so that the reader/ viewer can see that she saw hope through those illusions.

After sketching out on my sketchbook, I went into illustrator to roughly sketch out each frame. I have 18 frames all together at the end.

After sketching I designed the characters and place then started to paint each frame with a purple colour scheme as I wanted a contrast between the bright and dark scenes. I decided to use purple as most of the storybooks I read on little match girl used blue for the cool scenes so instead of using blue, I used purple.

| Reference / Inspiration |
This is the character design for the little match girl I followed the story whereby she has long blond curly hair but instead of being a kid I changed her to a pre-teen. I was inspired by the illustration style from princess and the frog whereby their noses weren't drawn on , instead of leaving it blank I added some freckles and blush. I also changed her clothes to suit the timeline of the 1900's.

| Grandma |
 |
| Reference / Inspiration |
This is the character design of the grandma, I took reference from Beauty and the Beast Ms Pots. I imagined a typical grandma with a bun and wrapped in a scarf and decided to design her that way as people would be able to tell that its her grandma as it's common image we all have of a cartoon grandma. I made her facial expression to look warm just like how it was described in the story.

For the background design I went for brick walls and stone walls and also vintage architecture to suit the 1900's. I took inspiration from the Princess And The Frog and Anastasia.
