Project 2- Font Design

LECTURE NOTES

22/5/2018 (Week 9)

We were given a short lecture about the overall module and we were also reminded that each assignment matters a lot and requires the best effort from each and every one of us eventhough it's stressful. We also took the time to recap about our previous lectures and what we've learned.

INSTRUCTIONS

Font Design ( Week 9-11)

Week 9

We were briefed on our 2nd project, that is based on font design. We were told to sketch out ideas of the word "Taylor's", based on the 10 typefaces that were given to us.

Figure 1.1 Sketch for Taylor's

Based on Futura Std ( Book), Futura Std ( Condensed), ITC New Baskerville Std (Roman), I came up with fonts that would suit the Taylor's mark.  After sketching, we moved on to illustrate our fonts on Adobe Illustrator while using the chosen typeface as a base.

I used the pen tool to illustrate the font as Futura Std (Book) as the base, I also matched the thickness of the mark with the thickness of the font so that it looks consistent. I decided to use Futura as the base as the mark for Taylor's looked modern so I tried to design a font that looked modern and also fit the mark. Going along the lines of modern font I designed another font with Futura Std (Condensed) as the base.

I decided to design another font without going too far from the original font of the Taylor's mark, I. decided to use ITC New Baskerville Std (Roman) as the base.

After receiving comments from Mr Vinod on how to making the R and the S more smooth by using circles. This was the final outcome.

After that we transferred our fonts to Fontlab and generated our font.

FEEDBACK

Week 9
Specific feedback: Mr Vinod looked at my book and said that the transition was good and that I learned not to put words too near to the edge. For the blog , I was told that I needed to retake some pictures as there was a lighting problem and also to make my pdf public and do some minor changes.
General feedback: Mr Vinod told us to look back at the work we have done with fresh eyes and come up with a few well crafted options.Another thing was that we need to keep the consistency in our font.

Week 11
General feedback: Mr Vinod told us that we don’t need to change each letter it can only be for certain letters that have that effect. He also told us to keep the consistency in the font and also we shouldn’t be scared to ask questions as it’ll help us learn.

Specific feedback: Mr Vinod told me to use circles to form the letter S and R so that I would look more smooth.

REFLECTION

Experience
Week 9; When it comes to designing a font we need to reference back to existing basic fonts as a base so that we'll know how the structure of the font works.Week 11, We don't have to change everything for each letter instead it can be just for a specific letter or a few.

Observation

Week 9; I realised that we a lot of attention must be taken when designing a font as details are important and also the consistency, it was definitely hard to maintain consistency especially when it came to curvy letters like s.Week 11, I realised that it was easier to make a smooth curve for the letter S and R when using the eclipse tool instead of using the pen tool.

Findings

Week 9; I realised that Taylor's mark was very modern and elegant at the same time so a font that is minimal yet tall would suit the mark.Week 11; It's important for the letters to be consistent and also its best for the letters to not be so flamboyant.

Type on Screen by Ellen Lupton

22/05/18 - 29/05/18 ( week 9 - week 10 )

Figure 3.0 Front Cover of Book

The book contains information on type in the web and also in apps and any internet platform in general. One part of the book talked about icons and logotypes. We are constantly surrounded by icons for example icons for apps such as Instagram , twitter and more. Icons can becomes ways of communicating emotions for example the emojis we use in messages are also icons. Screen icons fall under two categories which is user interface icons and application icons. User interface icons represent the tools and processes embodied in a device or software…
re product, while application icons depict a piece of software that is for sale in an App Store which in short is the icon for the applications in our phone such as gmail, Facebook and more.

Icons have also help aid in typography by appearing side by side with letterforms which are commonly seen these days. They help to enhance the meaning of the word and help deliver the message better. Icons are also commonly used in websites and social media platforms for navigation purposes. For example the home button navigates back to the homepage when clicked.

Figure 3.1 Front Cover of the Book

This book mostly contain different typefaces designed by all kinds of designers. It was a really fun and interesting because of the wide selection of typefaces. These are some of the typefaces that captured my attention.

Most of them attracted my attention because of the colour scheme and also the texture. They're also very eye catching because of their colours and the way they were designed.
