Event typography ( Week 10-13)

Week 10

Because today was a public holiday, we were given a task on facebook by Mr Vinod to compose a 150 word essay based on something that we love and hate. These are my two essays.

Figure 1.1 Love and Hate Essay

Later on I transferred it into InDesign to adjust and also change the fonts and make the necessary amendments .

After that, we were given instructions through Facebook during the Raya holidays to come up with a title that represents both essays and sketch it out. I thought of the title bittersweet as bitter would represent hate and sweet would represent love. Here are my sketches.

Figure 1.3 Thumbnail for Layout

After sketching out some thumbnails we were told to come up with a composition with the text and title we have . Mr Vinod said that it should be like an art piece and that the readability of the words is not highly important. So these were the compositions that I came up with.

I chose this as the final composition.

FEEDBACK

Week 13
General feedback: Mr Vinod told us that we should do our sketches fast and small and also our further reading is counted as our research. He also told us to think out of the box.

Specific feedback: Mr Vinod told me that I should experiment more and try out different things like gradient.

Week 14
General feedback: We should make sure that the brief that we upload is the correct one and that its public. We are also allowed to choose if we prefer to have mount or not and that if it's printed in A4, the words should be quite readable.

REFLECTION

Experience
Week 13; We should draw our thumbnail in a smaller size and it should also be done fast so that our ideas will flow fast.Week 14; I experience printing and framing my work and the printing process was a tad bit hard as it didn't fit the frame.

Observation

Week 13;It was easier to visualise when I was sketching out the thumbnails.Week14; It is nicer to have a hardcopy of an artwork rather than soft copy as it gives a different feel to the artwork.

Findings

Week 13; I realised that I need to experiment more and also look at typographer's works to get inspiration and learn different ways to approach text.Week 14; I found it nice and satisfying to see my artwork framed up .

Typography Sketchbooks by Steven Heller and Lita Talarico

12/06/18 (Week 12)

Figure 3.1 Front Cover of the Book

This book mostly contain different typefaces designed by all kinds of designers. It was a really fun and interesting book because of the wide selection of typefaces. These are some of the typefaces that captured my attention.

Most of them attracted my attention because of the colour scheme and also the texture. They're also very eye catching because of their colours and the way they were designed. It was very interesting to see the different variation and styles and also how some of the typefaces were combined with visuals to enhance its meaning further.

Typographic systems by Kimberly Elam

19/06/18(Week 13)

Figure 3.5 Front Cover of the Book

This book talks about the different systems used in arranging text such as axial system, radial system, dilatational system, random system, grid system, modular system and bilateral system.

The axial system is the system is one of the simplest system. All elements are organised either to the left or right of a single axis. Radial system on the other hand, all elements are organised to extend from a central point of focus like rays.In a dilatational system circles dilate or expand from a central point. Examples of this system include the iris of the eye, the waves created when a pebble is dropped into still water, and sound waves. Similar to the radial system, the compositions are dynamic as the eye moves along the arc of the circle or is drawn to the focal point at the centre of the circle.

Type Team by Tony Seddon

26/06/18 ( Week14)

Figure3.6 Front Cover of the Book

This book contains a wide range of guides on how to combine individual typefaces for any sort of  project. The author states that choosing a typeface is like deciding what type of music to listen to. We end up picking a certain music due to its tune and catchiness of the rhythm, what mood we're in and what we're doing. Well, picking a typeface is similar too, we pick them for different reasons to match the text.

From the chapter "Hierarchy is important", I understood that when it comes to selecting a typeface for a certain project, it is important to pay attention to the number of available weights in each of the type family. For example, if you choose a wider/thicker type style for a text compared to a narrow/thin style, it will most likely stand out and therefore create hierarchy.

From browsing through the wide variety of typefaces and the way they were design I analysed that colour also plays and important part in typography as an eye catching colour could catch the attention of the viewer for example using contrast colours.
