LECTURE NOTES

Lecture 3: In Depth Typography
10/4/2018 (Week 7)

Kerning refers to automatic adjustment of space between letters.

Ragging means the irregular or uneven vertical margin of a block of type which usually occurs at the right hand side of a text.

Different types of tracking:

- loose tracking

- tight tracking

- normal tracking

Lecture 4: Indicating Paragraphs
15/4/2018 (Week 8)

Today we had a refresh on kerning, tracking and ragging. Mr Vinod lectured us about indicating paragraphs. People used to insert codes in between text which includes a leading strip which refers to the distance between the baselines. Indentations were meant to indicate a paragraph space.

Mr Vinod also talked about widows and orphans . A widow is a short line of type left alone at the end of a column of a text, and an orphan is a short line of type left at the top of column. They are both considered bad but widows can still be tolerated but still they are both bad.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1 ( Week 7-8)

We were required to design a book with words and we were only allowed to used one of the typeface out of the 10 that were given by Mr Vinod. I decided to use Futura Std.

Week 8
Mr Vinod told us that all of our work did not followed his instructions as we expressed each word where instead we were only suppose to express four sentences. This is the final outcome after editing it.

FEEDBACK

Week 7

Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod told me that the animation for my name was good but it wasn’t challenging enough. For my word animation, he told me that he preferred my first idea instead of my second one and that I should work on the first one as the glitch (second idea) doesn’t really represent what a drunk person sees.

Week 8:
General feedback: For the book, Mr Vinod told us that we were only allowed to express 4 sentences and that we should maintain consistency and also follow the grid when placing the words.

Specific feedback: I was told that I needed to do some tweaking with some of the spreads and also work on my ledding and alignment.

REFLECTION

Experience:
Week 7; it was my first time using In design , and I found it quite easy to use once I got use to it.I've also learned that I need to be more confident in my ideas and also to constantly improve it until it's good.Week 8;I found it harder to express only four sentences as it was more limited and also the fact that we had to take into account that the book would connect and was also consistent at the same time.

Observation:
Week 7; it was pretty easy to use In design for the first project. I found it hard to do the first project as I didn't know how to place the words and make it look simple yet really nice .Week 8;You'll need an eye for detail when it comes to this project as we need to check the leading  and more.

Findings:
Week 7; when faced with a designer's blog, I should question all the different design principles and at the same time do more research.Week 8; It is important to make sure that each page in a book connects and that there is a consistency.

FUTHER READING

Typeface Classic Typography For Contemporary Design by Tamye Riggs

8/05/18 ( week 7)

Figure 3.0 Front Cover

This book contains all of the different types of fonts and it also included many posters that contained the fonts used. This was useful as it helped me to understand how each typeface played a different role and how they each conveyed a different emotion. Typefaces that are widely used today are normally san serifs such as Futura. They are commonly used as its easily readable and is a nice basic font which are widely used now.

Brand : the typography issue by Qianqian, Alice Chen,  Kammy Tai, Kiminco Huang.

This book contained examples of how different kinds of brands design their brand together with typography to represent themselves. There were so many different kinds of visuals and these were some of the visuals that peeked my interest. It was interesting to see how some brands used printmaking in order to create the font for their brand and it was also interesting to see how each brand played around with typography and illustrations to represent their brand and also the colour schemes they used.I also took notice of how each brand arranged the words and also the typeface that they used, like for example one of the brands made their letters scattered around the space. whereby some where neatly placed.
